English

At John Clare Primary School, our English provision is grounded in evidence-based practice that prioritises reading, writing and spelling as interconnected skills. Our approach integrates literacy-rich environments with high-quality teaching to unlock learning for all pupils, creating conditions where every child can read and write fluently.

We endeavour to ensure that our children have positive attitudes towards reading, writing and speaking. We want our children to read fluently, widely and for pleasure. In order to achieve this, we teach a range of genres across the school, resulting in children being exposed to, and knowledgeable about, literary styles, authors and genres. They can express preferences and give opinions, supported by evidence, about different texts.

We support children to write with confidence and accuracy for a variety of purposes and audiences whilst developing their own individual flair. We aim for our children to write with grammatical accuracy, be able to apply spelling patterns correctly, and use a neat, legible handwriting style. We aim to expose our children to a wide range of vocabulary so that they are able to decipher new words and then use them when reading, writing and speaking. We also aim for our children to apply all of these English skills consistently to all areas of the curriculum.  Our English provision is supported by materials from Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership.
